Native, Hybrid and Responsive, which direction for the application you design?

Each of the above approaches has its own strengths and limitations. It is important that you understand what you have at hand and what you can try to achieve.

Native app

A native app is an application specifically designed for a mobile operating system. App of this type cannot run on other platforms, such as a native iOS application that will be developed from the Swift programming language and cannot run on Android phones.

The biggest advantage of native apps is that they allow users to access and use all the features easily and will rarely encounter errors if designed completely. Native apps also offer the most complete and high-speed experience, so they still make up the majority of apps today.

However, because it cannot run on other operating systems, developers who want to cover their application on many platforms must recode it many times. For example, it is not uncommon for startups to have to develop their applications up to 3 times for popular platforms such as iOS, Android and Windows. The process requires not only relative human resources but also time, effort and cost.

Therefore, many companies that do not have abundant resources choose to develop apps for only one platform first. If the app is successful on one platform, they will come back to develop it for another platform. It's also worth noting that apps running on iOS 7 and above are currently the most profitable of all platforms, so it's understandable that more and more companies are choosing to design iPhone apps first.

Hybrid app

As the name suggests, a hybrid app is an application designed to run on many different platforms. They are developed based on a standard programming language (such as C# combined with HTML5 and Javascript). User interactions on this type of app are also often managed by plugins in the operating system.

The biggest advantage of hybrid apps is that they can support cross-platform and help companies save the cost of coding many times over. On the user side, as long as the application is well designed, it is difficult for them to distinguish between a native and a hybrid app. With frameworks that support broken Ionic, Phonegap, etc. are increasingly being upgraded, many famous startups have switched to hybrid apps, typically Uber, Evernote, Instagram, Gmail, etc. Very surprising, right?

However, hybrids are not without their downsides either. For applications that require complex interactions, hybrid apps will be a difficult problem for developers. Hybrid has many limitations when developers want to develop their apps to a higher level and more sophistication. The cost of maintaining a hybrid application is also often greater than the cost of a native application.

What about responsive website?

Responsive web, a website designed to rotate and adapt to all types of screens, will bring an experience that is not too different from an app. In fact, you can reduce this difference to a minimum to ensure that your home page always displays full content on all screens and browsers.

The biggest limitation of responsive web is that you cannot deliver content through apps on the App Store. This can be the biggest risk especially if you want to release paid apps. Another disadvantage is that users will always need a new network to access your website to use the service - which may not be worth mentioning in developed countries, but in Vietnam or Southeast Asia in general, it's okay. should be considered. As many of the productivity services on mobile apps today allow users to use them even when there is no network, your web app will most likely be abandoned.

Epilogue

Today's mobile platforms always bring a lot of opportunities for people with entrepreneurial blood. However, you also need to consider carefully before deciding to choose the type of app for your company based on product characteristics and customer groups.
